Some paintings are duds. I find the reasons why are fairly repeatable:

1. Not establishing strong relationships between the areas in the light and the shade

2. Chasing the light, especially changing the sky after the color relationships have been set

3. Overworking

4. Trying to save a painting by adding details

5. Being lazy mixing colors and putting a big area of color down without it being the correct luminosity

This was just a few blocks away from our rental, near st. Pancras Station. I used my travel gouache kit and sat on someone’s stoop to paint it, hoping they wouldn’t mind!
