Landscape painting is an inherently regional activity. It draws from and draws attention to the land that surrounds us. I love seeing how other artists, galleries, and arts organizations around Rensselaer County, Troy, Albany, Sand Lake, Averill Park, and the wider Upper Hudson Valley respond to the same landscape, towns, rivers, woods, and working places that show up in my own paintings.
This page is a living guide to local artists near Troy, NY, Rensselaer County art galleries, Capital Region landscape painters, Upper Hudson Valley art organizations, and nearby artist-run spaces, museums, and arts councils. It is not meant to be a complete directory; it is a starting point for discovering people and places that help make the Capital Region and Rensselaer Plateau a generous place to look at art.

You can also explore my own regional work through the artwork catalogue and the artwork map, which organizes paintings by location.

Older and Wider Landscape Painting Inspirations
Then of course there are less regional or less contemporary inspirations: landscape painters from many places and times whose work remains a deep source of energy. Ivan Shishkin, Peder Mork Monsted, Alfred Joseph Casson, Lawren Stewart Harris, and Neil Welliver are a few that I return to often.
