This is one of the closest conserved lands to our house and one of my favorite. It’s mostly closed forest canopy, but there are a few wetland areas where the forest edge ends either in white pine like here, or in hemlock. The wetlands are all still cattails – not invasive phragmites like you see most places – with lots wild blueberry bushes mixed in.

I’ve painted from almost this exact spot before, just facing a little more due south. This time it was late afternoon so I faced east, knowing the sun would be getting lower behind me by the end of the painting. It didn’t disappoint, lighting up the corner of the painting really nicely at the end.

I’m pretty pleased with how it looks right off the easel. I’ll let it sit for a while in the studio and decide later if it’s done or if I want to do anything more to it.
